“ERIE ROMANCE – JOURNEY’S END”

“This is the companion part of the Erie Romance set. The scene shows the ferry Pelee Islander, in its early years, just returning to its homeport at the end of a bustling day.

I have been waiting a long time for the opportunity to properly use the effect of a strong backlight burning out the edges of the subject with its intensity. This piece was perfect for just that.” -Ronald Suchiu

Some Added History

This dock, although now made of cement, still exists on Lake Erie near the southernmost point in Canada. The warehouse located between the two large ships in Friends belonged to Heinz the famous ketchup people. This was quite a busy port from about 1920 to mid-1940, as Heinz would ship their famous condiments from pickles to ketchup. As for the ferry Pelee Islander, this is the first of three ferries that traveled back and forth from Pelee Island to the mainland.

If you are a birder or a butterfly expert, then you will recognize the name Pelee. This whole area is located mere miles from Point Pelee where birds and butterflies come before their long journey to places like South America.

Then there are the incredible sunsets. World-famous magazines have written up this area for its magnificent sunsets. It ranks right up there with Hawaii. With all this beauty it is no wonder Ronald Suchiu felt compelled to paint this historic scene.

This set is keyed and is very impressive when framed together.
